Full-on bike boots are great, and while it’s hard to compete against them from a protective point of view, they can be bettered in many other areas. The draw to the stubby J-6 boots was firstly their stylish suede and full-grain leather make-up – I could wear them anywhere, so no need to carry a set of spare shoes. I was also impressed by the specification of build; ankle and heel protection, an abundance of padding in key impact areas, and midsole reinforcement owing to an insert add up to make a CE-Level 2 boot.

And they’re waterproof. I’ve ridden countless times in the wet, and they do indeed always keep the water from reaching my socks; I’m impressed, and also by the level of comfort, meaning you stay comfy whether you’ve ridden or walked in them all day. The boots lace up really tight, making you feel very secure above your ankle. I’ve had a few pairs of low boots before, but none as good as these. My only criticism is that the soles are slippy on garage forecourts with spilt fuel.
