Best biking roads in the Yorkshire Dales: Video, maps and .gpx files

by

The Yorkshire Dales is famous for its spectacular scenery, unspoilt countryside, picturesque towns and villages and ample supply of opportunities for outdoor pursuits (including hiking, climbing, caving and more) – but in addition to all that, it’s also a haven for bikers; with a seemingly endless supply of cracking roads to keep you entertained.

To help you plan your very own trip to the Dales, we’ve pulled together a few spectacular routes (and some legal trails too for the more adventurous among you) that take in some of the best riding the area has to offer, including the Buttertubs Pass, the road across to Tan Hill and the B6255 from Hawes to the Ribbleshead Viaduct.

It’s not always easy to find legal lanes and byways, particularly if you haven’t got much knowledge about the area you’re exploring – but thankfully, you’re spoilt for choice in the Dales.

But the easiest way to do is to check out the Trans Euro Trail. Their website offers downloadable GPX files (for each specific country), which can be to your phone, tablet, PC or GPS device. There’s also an Android app which you can download straight to your phone and access and download all of the routes with a couple of taps. It’s very easy to use – and if you activate GPS location services, you’ll even be able to see where you are in relation to the next trail.

As with files given freely by any source, always check the journey before you leave, and use common sense when following. Happy travels…
